The Yarn: In Search Of The Perfect Pork Pie…

Folk Fayre
In Search Of The Perfect Pork Pie…

"Henwens, (a name derived from a mythical Welsh sow) is a passion project breaking boundaries and garnering acclaim. Customers flock to the small south-east London shop in search of sausage & a yarn..."

Friends Sweyn Hall and Charlie Smith share a deep love for food and provenance.

Together, they are innately curious about the centuries-old traditions and mythology around food and fayre - old English banqueting celebrations, field and flower produce, and of course, British made.

When a love like this runs through your veins, you can't help but share. Through their small store in South East London, that's exactly what they've been doing since autumn last year when their burgeoning dream to create a Butcher & Delicatessen became a reality.

Henwens, (a name derived from a mythical Welsh sow, thought to be 'the mother of abundance', nourishment and traditions around feast and fertility), is a passion project that has broken boundaries and garnered acclaim. Henwens relishes support from the local community and visitors alike, who lap up the infections enthusiasm from the founders and flock for the famous pork pies (sold out within hours on opening day).

“The pies are a labour of love and a pure experience from start to finish” Charlie tells us, “all made from scratch using Sweyn's pastry recipe and a carefully custom-made spice blend inspired by taste-testing in and around Yorkshire. We're working on a pie stamp…”

With sausages, pork pies and other delicacies in store, the duo intend to expand to new forms - communal celebrations and collaborations with like-minded providers are on the cards. But for now they are busy honing their craft, ensuring they keep sources as local as possible, and customers happy and loyal.

While they won't go as far as sharing the secret sausage or pork pie recipes, the pair did reveal their three desert island ingredients -
Fennel Seed, White Pepper & Onion Confit in Pork Fat.”

For the love of tradition, seasons, and generational knowledge; sharing good food and tales of feasting and fayre are what Henwens is all about.
