The Yarn | Will Fisher Brings The Country House Home …
"Everyone has something they're inexplicably drawn to - for me it was chimney pieces, and it began at a young age”,
says Will Fisher on a London street while waiting for a cab, with the kind of infectious enthusiasm that makes you wonder how you've ever lived without one. By the way, as he explains, “chimney piece” is simply the posh way of saying fireplace. Same thing - and, according to Will, the beating heart of any home…
For all the generational grandeur of the classical country-house aesthetic he trades in, Will Fisher has never forgotten his south London roots or the value of hard work. Together with his wife, Charlotte Freemantle, he runs Jamb - arguably Britain's most influential antique and reproduction furniture and lighting business. He's part dealer, part designer, part frontman - best known for his obsession with fireplaces and his lyrical way of talking about historical details and layered, lived-in interiors.
From the flagship on London's Pimlico Road to showrooms across the United States, Jamb's antique and reproduction pieces deliver the 'English Country House' aesthetic to homes, hotels and hospitality spaces across the globe.
Born in Lewisham, Fisher began his long journey at just 10 years old. “A kernel of passion was ignited early,” he recalls, “and I was lucky enough to meet kindred spirits along the way who helped me realise this vision of taking chimney pieces into houses around the world.”
Over the past 25 years, Jamb has earned a reputation as one of the finest antique and reproduction houses offering the feel of an 'English country home' wherever it's longed for. It's a vision shared by both Will and Charlotte - grounded in their love of history, houses and the hearth.
Perhaps the clearest expression of this is their own family home: a late-18th-century house in Camberwell that they gutted, designed and decorated with painstaking detail, filling it with the pieces they've collected and adored over many years.
“An English country house aesthetic is created by generations adding to things - a collected layering of style that can translate anywhere. There's beauty in the authenticity.”
While Will brings passion, a collector's eye and a good dose of eccentricity, Charlotte brings clarity of vision and acts as the brand's gatekeeper. Together, they are fierce custodians of the aesthetic they're known for, producing restoration and replica work that brings the spirit of the country house not just to London but to clients abroad, in exacting detail. Jamb works with the finest makers around the world, with every piece crafted by a dedicated team in their south London workshop. Bespoke details, patination and hand-finishing are hallmarks of Jamb's process - ensuring each piece feels at home in either a period interior or a crisp contemporary setting.
With an expanding market in the US, stateside clients have become central to Jamb's world. From California to Chicago, their designers and private clients share a fastidious, uncompromising devotion to antique, replica and era-inspired interiors — and a deep love of British style and sensibility.
As for what Fisher is happiest wearing? “A onesie or boiler suit, amongst the dust of restoration - hearth and heart of home,” he laughs. Jokes aside, he has a particular appreciation for a William Crabtree jacket: “Beautifully made and effortless to wear.”
“Kindred spirits along the way helped me realise this vision of taking chimney pieces into houses around the world.”
And he's not one to sit still. Fisher's latest fixation? “An Art Deco fusion with the Neo-Classical world. The unsung heroes were the Deco Classicists,” he says, describing the vision for a Deco flat in Bermondsey.
While Jamb's know-how and the English country house aesthetic are coveted worldwide, London is home - and home, for Will, means a fireplace. So what exactly makes a home? “A burning fire,” he says simply. “Can't beat it.” A full circle of sorts - though somehow you doubt he'll be sitting still beside it for long.
Our winter edition of The Yarn is out now in our London and Cotswolds stores. Our third edition celebrates the season and we're delighted to chat to two of my favourite customers in this edition - Robin Lucas and Will Fisher from Jamb interiors.
Both have wonderful stories to tell about their past and present and how they bring style into the everyday and we loved photographing them in their worlds, wearing William Crabtree. We also look at how the humble pub has raised the bar - both in the city and country (with two of our faves conveniently located close to our stores); and spotlight local Cotswolds artists that adorn the walls in Stow-on-the-Wold.
We hope you enjoy your copy which will be shipped with every order and of course, available in store… while stocks last.
