The Yarn: Secret Summer Destinations & What To Pack

The Yarn: Secret Summer Destinations & What To Pack

Can you believe it's July already?

Summer is in full swing and, whether you're staying close to home or heading for Cornwall or Corfu, thoughts inevitably turn to holiday plans - where to go, what to pack, and how best to make the most of a well-earned break.

We're firm believers in a capsule holiday wardrobe. Not only does it make travelling with hand luggage a realistic possibility (and speed up your arrival at the other end), it also removes the need for any sartorial decision-making once you're there, leaving you free to focus on more important matters - pool or beach?

To provide a little inspiration, we've shared an excerpt from the summer print edition of The Yarn. Written for us by the wonderful Yolanda Edwards of YOLO Journal, Yolanda has kindly revealed some of her favourite - and often unexpected - destinations for a summer escape.

In other news, we're currently looking for a Sales Associate for our London store, so if you know someone with a passion for menswear and love of a yarn, we'd love to hear from them. And do mark your diaries: we're holding an Archive Sale at The Music Room in Mayfair next Tuesday, 7 July, with up to 70% off RRP.

1st Floor,
58 Davies Street

Do drop by if you're nearby.

We hope to see you soon and wishing you very happy holidays when they arrive....

Surprising Summer Destinations

Yolanda from YOLO Journal shares her favourites

Who better to ask about insider summer travel recs (or any travel for that matter) than the uber stylish Yolanda Edwards, founder of YOLO Journal, a visually immersive print magazine and weekly newsletter with a trusted perspective on travel. Here Yolanda shares some of her favourite unexpected summer escapes. Pack your bags...

Soulac-sur-Mer, France

While this region is famous for its legendary wines, the secret is its empty Atlantic beaches! Soulac-sur-Mer, an easy train ride from Bordeaux, is a seaside town with a main street filled with stores and cafes, and lovely beach cabanas you can rent for the day, or the week. Their daily market has such beautiful products–the local fish and oysters a highlight–that you’ll want to find a place to rent so you can cook! But if you do a day trip, get a delicious coffee at Merlo (their brownies are to die for), and a loaf of the most amazing artisanal bread at Montreal-sur-Mer to snack on, have a late lunch on the beach at Brasserie La Plage, and finish with a delicious ice cream at Judici. Heading into the wine region, lunch at Cafe Lavinal or Maison d’Estournel is a treat, and a visit to one of the oldest estates in the region, Chateau Larrivaux (women-owned since 1580!), is a treat.

Patmos, Greece

This is the island that calls me to Greece every summer. A tiny rock in the Dodecanese, with no airport, it takes perseverance (and clever flight and ferry coordination) to get there, but it’s so worth it. The most beautiful water, gorgeous beaches, great hikes, and dreamy barefoot lunches. If you want to hole up for a week, rent a house, but I’d highly suggest Pagostas, a three room inn that is just brilliant–and you won’t have to think about anything else, because Grigoris will tell you exactly what beach to go to depending on the wind that day, and where to eat. Consider Leros, Symi, and Halki as add-ons, especially if you’re flying directly into Kos or Rhodes

Arcachon, France

What I love about this area is that you don’t need a car at all to explore it and nearby Cap Ferret. You can fly into Bordeaux, train to Arcachon, and take a boat over to Cap Ferret, missing all the endless traffic (and you don’t need more than a bike once you’re there!) In the town of Arcachon itself, stay at Hotel Ville d’Hiver, explore the historic area around it, and make sure you have lunch or dinner at Club Plage Pereire–it’s fantastic, and right on the beach! Eat cannelés and Dune Blanches from Patisserie Guignard–the best. Don’t leave the area without having lunch at Chez Hortense in Cap Ferret–the mussels are a must.
