The Season for Layering

The Season for Layering

The Season for Layering

With the leaves turning and the days shortening, the season for layering is upon us. Some thoughtful planning around layering can make all the difference to feeling both comfortable and appropriately dressed for whatever the weather brings.

This season, our colours and cloth work in harmony so getting dressed is easy - from socks to knitwear, scarves to coats, layering in hues that complement each other. As mentioned in my tips below, think about less textured knits (or sleeveless) for layering at work and leave the chunky knits for weekend...

New season essentials are dropping daily in both our London and Cotswolds stores (and online of course).

Hope to see you soon,

JP

A Rugby Shirt layered over an Oxford Shirt is a great combination

A fairisle slipover layered under a jacket banishes the bulk and delivers warmth in comfort

Layer 1
Shirt & Trousers

Designed with cut and comfort in mind to get the basics right before the layers. Winter chinos or denim and classic shirting with relaxed or more formal collar options.

Layer 2
Knitwear

Choose a plain knit to go under jackets and something with more texture to layer under outerwear at the weekend.

Layer 3
Outerwear

Next comes a Gilet, and/or a Jacket, Field Coat or an Overcoat

Layer 4
Accessories

Scarves are the final layering essential for winter. And of course, belts & socks too.

Lessons in Layering

In the winter months, being prepared for the weather is the most fundamental rule for dressing.
I also suggest:
  • Always keep a jumper with you - whether you're wearing it, draping around shoulders or tied around your waist,  a jumper is an every day winter essential regardless of your occasion or outerwear options. Being warm is underrated!
  • Keep a range of knitwear textures to rotate depending on the day. I would suggest layering a finer knit in either a sportshirt or fairisle slipover, for example, to wear under jackets or gilets. And keep the chunkier knits for casual / weekend wear that can be worn comfortably under coats.
  • Tucking shirts into trousers under fine knits works well for more formal occasions but it's fine to keep them untucked under knitwear over denim, in my opinion.
  • Play with colour - our new season collection has been designed so that all hues work together but you can also have fun with colour injections on a dreary day with socks and scarves.

Our knitwear (and scarf) collection is available in our stores in London and Stow-on-the-Wold and of course, online too.
